Choosing between Egyptian cotton and linen bedding is easier when you compare feel, weave, care and fit rather than relying on a luxury label alone. Both can make a beautiful bed, but they suit different preferences.

Egyptian cotton and linen: what to compare

Be careful when choosing the material of your bedding. “Egyptian cotton” is a material label, but it does not by itself tell you how a finished sheet will feel. Check the stated fibre content, weave and care information, and buy from a supplier who clearly explains the material. Linen sheets, are another natural-fibre option with a different drape and textured feel. Expect some ironing, unless you like the wrinkled look.

Does thread count matter?

Thread count measures the number of threads in a specified area of woven fabric. It can be useful context for cotton sheets, but a higher figure does not automatically mean better quality or longer life. Fibre quality, yarn, weave and finishing also affect the result. Linen is often described by its fabric weight rather than by a headline thread-count number.

Check the fit before you buy

Measure your mattress width, length and depth, then compare those measurements with the fitted sheet specifications. Names such as twin, queen and king vary by region and manufacturer; a mattress-size label is not the same as the finished sheet dimensions. For a duvet cover, measure the duvet insert separately. This simple check matters more than choosing by name alone.
