Why Do I Need a Duvet Cover?

A duvet (word originated from France) means a large bag filled with down, feathers, wool or other stuffing to create a warm bed covering. It is similar to quilts, comforters and bedspreads but has its own differences. The duvet (pronounced "due-vay") is like a comforter, only with a washable and replaceable cover. As water would ruin the stuffing, duvets usually are mostly not washable and therefore duvet covers are needed. A duvet cover is simply a large pillowcase for your comforter! It has buttons, zip or strings to keep the cover secure. There can be linen duvets covers, cotton covers, synthetic covers etc.

The reason one would need duvet cover is to protect an expensive down comforter. No one would like to spend lots of money for warm, cozy, luxurious down comforter and then get it soiled, snagged or possibly a whole lot worse in days?

Say you do not have this pricey down comforter? In that case you would need a linen duvet cover (or a cover made from any other fabric for that matter) to protect your inexpensive alternative! Why? Do you know what it takes to wash your huge comforter? Even if your washing machine is large enough for that job (really??), it will take lots of energy and patience to wash your over-sized home bedding and then to properly dry it. However if you use a duvet cover to protect your duvet, it can be easily washed whenever needed (most people do this once a week or twice a month).

One more advantage of duvet covers is that they are changeable, and you can alter the mood of the bedroom without having to completely redecorate. Most of the interior designers enjoy changing the feel of a master bedroom by simply changing a duvet cover. Linen duvets covers are increasingly popular for this purpose. Duvet covers can be purchased as a part of bedding set, all pieces in coordinating patterns. They are also available separately. It is very nice to change the duvet cover along with the season or even use a festive patterned cover around the holiday times.
