Updated August 10, 2026: this guide has been refreshed with clear machine-washing, hand-washing, stain-treatment, drying and ironing advice.

How should you wash linen tablecloths and napkins?

Start with the care label. Most washable linen tablecloths and napkins can be cleaned with a mild detergent at the recommended temperature, either by machine or by hand. Separate colours, treat stains before they set and give large cloths enough room to move and rinse.

Prepare table linen before washing

Shake away crumbs and inspect the cloth in good light. Blot fresh spills instead of rubbing them deeper into the weave. Identify the stain where possible because oil, wine, wax and food pigments need different treatment. Test any product on an inconspicuous area first.

  • Remove candles and hardened wax carefully before laundering.
  • Apply a small amount of suitable stain treatment to the affected area.
  • Avoid leaving coloured spills to dry for several days.
  • Do not mix white and strongly coloured table linen in the same load.

Machine-washing linen tablecloths

Use a drum large enough for the tablecloth to move freely. Overloading can trap creases and prevent detergent from rinsing out. Choose a gentle or standard cycle according to the care label and use a measured amount of mild detergent.

Avoid routine use of chlorine bleach, especially on coloured, natural or finished linen. Skip heavy fabric softener if it leaves residue. For more detailed stain guidance, see how to remove stains from linen fabric.

How to hand wash linen napkins

Fill a clean basin with water at the label’s recommended temperature and dissolve a small amount of detergent. Submerge the napkins and move them gently through the water. Do not scrub, twist or wring the fabric aggressively.

Rinse with clean water until no obvious detergent remains. Support the wet fabric when lifting it, then press out excess water gently. Rolling it inside a clean towel can remove additional moisture without hard wringing.

Dry table linen without deep creases

Air-drying is simple and energy-efficient. Smooth the cloth, align the hems and spread its weight across a broad line or rack. Avoid narrow pegs that may distort a heavy wet edge. Keep coloured linen away from prolonged strong sunlight if fading is a concern.

If tumble drying is permitted, choose a low setting and remove the linen while it is still slightly damp. Excessive heat can make creases harder to press and may contribute to shrinkage.

Ironing and storing tablecloths

For a crisp finish, iron while the linen is slightly damp and follow the temperature on the care label. Work from one section to the next without stretching the edges. If you prefer a relaxed look, smooth the cloth by hand and accept the natural texture.

Store only when completely dry. Fold loosely in a cool cupboard, or roll a large formal tablecloth around an acid-free tube to reduce hard fold lines. Our guide to ironing table linen offers more pressing tips.

Frequently asked questions

Can linen napkins go in the washing machine?
Usually yes, if the care label permits it. Wash similar colours together, use mild detergent and avoid overloading the drum.

Should you wash stained table linen in hot water?
Not automatically. Heat can set some stains. Identify and pretreat the mark, then use the temperature specified by the care label.

Can you tumble dry a linen tablecloth?
Only when the care label allows it. Use a low setting and remove the cloth slightly damp to reduce deep creasing.
