Summer is Here: Vacation Packing in 6 Easy Steps
Updated August 7, 2026
Vacation packing becomes easier when every item has a purpose and most clothes can be worn more than once. Linen is especially useful for warm-weather travel because it is breathable, comfortable and easy to style, but a good packing plan matters more than filling the suitcase with options.
1. Check the weather and your real itinerary
Look at typical daytime and evening temperatures, rain, wind and local dress expectations. List the activities you have actually planned—beach, walking, dinner, travel day—then pack for those rather than imaginary occasions.
Include one warmer layer even for a summer destination. Air-conditioned transport and windy evenings can feel much cooler than the forecast suggests.
2. Build a small colour palette
Choose two neutral base colours and one accent. Every top should work with at least two bottoms, and every layer should coordinate with most outfits. Natural linen, white, navy, stone and muted blue are easy starting points, but the best palette is one you already wear.
A limited palette also simplifies shoes, bags and accessories. For more ideas, see our guide to versatile linen colour combinations.
3. Pack versatile linen pieces
A relaxed linen shirt can be worn buttoned, open over a vest or as a beach layer. A tunic can work as a top, cover-up or dress depending on its length and opacity. Straight trousers or shorts coordinate with several tops, while a scarf can add warmth, colour or sun protection.
Use five ways to style a linen tunic to turn one garment into several outfits. If you sew your own travel wardrobe, explore linen in the Clothing category.
4. Use a simple packing list
Write the list before opening the wardrobe. For a week in warm weather, a starting point might be:
- three or four tops;
- two or three bottoms;
- one versatile dress or tunic;
- one light outer layer;
- swimwear and sleepwear;
- two pairs of shoes plus travel shoes;
- underwear and a compact laundry bag.
Adjust for access to laundry and the activities planned. Fewer pieces are realistic when you can wash and air-dry clothing during the trip.
5. Fold or roll according to the garment
Fold structured shirts, jackets and garments that crease sharply. Roll soft T-shirts, knitwear and casual pieces. Place heavier items near the wheels of a rolling suitcase and fill small gaps with socks or swimwear.
Linen will crease, so aim for manageable folds rather than perfection. Unpack on arrival, hang garments and smooth them with slightly damp hands. A travel steamer can help, but relaxed linen often looks best without a pressed finish.
6. Keep essentials in your personal bag
Pack medication, documents, chargers, valuables and one change of clothing where you can reach them. Add a reusable water bottle after security and keep liquids within the airline's current limits. Do not put anything essential only in checked luggage.
Care for linen while travelling
Air garments after wearing before placing them back in the suitcase. Treat sunscreen, food and drink marks promptly, and wash according to the care label with a small amount of mild detergent. Our summer linen-care guide covers perspiration, sunscreen, drying and storage.
If linen becomes damp, let it dry completely before packing. Trapped moisture creates odour and can damage both the garment and other suitcase contents.
Before you close the suitcase
- Remove items that create only one outfit.
- Try on uncertain combinations at home.
- Check luggage weight and transport restrictions.
- Leave space for a laundry bag and the return journey.
- Photograph important documents and store copies securely.
A lighter suitcase is easier to move and easier to use. Pack around your itinerary, choose pieces that work together and let breathable linen cover several roles rather than bringing a different outfit for every moment.
