When you start on an upholstery project it's just as important to consider the function of the piece of furniture as the overall look. Get this wrong, and no matter how pretty the chair might look, it won't last long and you'll find yourself having to recover it. To help you choose the right upholstery fabric we've got some simple tips and hints to ensure successful, practical and beautiful results.

Upholstery is the craft of repurposing or fixing up a piece of furniture that has fabric fittings or cushions. It is a highly skilled art but is also something that anyone can learn and practise. People commonly think of upholstery as making cushion covers, but is actually refers to handling the padding, stuffing, springs and coverings. It's the ideal way to give new life to a tired but much loved piece, or to upcycle a second-hand item.

How to choose the right upholstery fabric

If you're revamping a chair, sofa or bed headboard, here's how to get the perfect upholstery fabric:

  • Sourcing the furniture is the first step. You might have a specific look in mind – from Mid-Century modern prints to rustic shabby chic linen fabric, for example. This will dictate the shape and form you're looking for. Or you might love rummaging in antique shops or flea markets and just stumble across a chair or sofa that is the perfect fix-up project.
  • Although the shape and style of the piece of furniture is important, choosing the right fabric is also essential. Think about where you plan to put the piece – what will it be used for, and what is the colorscheme and feel of that space? Do you want bold patterns or a minimalist look? How will it look in a few years' time?
  • Work out your budget. Fabric prices vary enormously, but the main thing to consider is the quality. Buy from a reputable manufacturer and read customer reviews before you spend your money. Measure your piece and calculate the amount of fabric you'll need so you can find out the cost before you order.
  • Furniture that will get a lot of wear needs fabric that's durable and preferably easy to clean. Linen fabric for upholstery is a great choice as it's washable, tough yet soft and long lasting.
  • Ask your fabric supplier for a swatch so you can see how the material looks with the actual piece and alongside other elements in your home. There is usually just a small charge for this, but it is often redeemable against a purchase.
  • For families with small children or pets, consider making slipcovers. These, when made from a washable fabric like linen, can be machine washed. So you don't have to worry about spills or muddy paws.

Once you've bought your fabric and fixed up the 'bones' of your piece, you can get working on turning it from scruffy thing to beautiful centrepiece.

If you find the perfect upholstery fabric but are worried you don't have the skills to finish the job to a standard you'd like, consider enlisting the help of a professional upholsterer
