How to Care for Table Linens: Washing and Stain Removal
Updated August 31, 2026: Care guidance, links, images and presentation reviewed.
Quick answer: Check the care label, treat spills promptly, use the mildest suitable cleaner and wash with a gentle detergent. Avoid chlorine bleach and high heat. Do not tumble-dry or iron a stained area until the mark has disappeared, because heat can set it.
Table and kitchen linens take a bit of a hammering, with wine spills, candle wax, lipstick and food stains. If you have wondered how to treat a mark on a linen tablecloth or napkin, this guide explains the essential steps.

Before treating a stain
Blot liquids and lift away solids without rubbing them further into the fibres. Check the item’s care label and test any stain treatment on a hidden area first. A product described as suitable for fabric is not automatically suitable for every dye, finish or heirloom textile. For stain-specific guidance, see our guide to removing stains from linen.
Act quickly
The sooner you treat a stain, the better the chance of removing it. Rinse or blot with cool water where the care label permits, then apply a suitable treatment gently. Do not scrub, and never mix cleaning agents. Avoid chlorine bleach unless the manufacturer explicitly allows it for that white, washable item.
Soak only when appropriate
If soaking is permitted, use cool or lukewarm water and follow the treatment label. Avoid very hot water on an unknown stain, as heat can make some marks harder to remove. Fragile, antique or dry-clean-only linens are best assessed by a professional.
Wash gently
Follow the care label and use a short, gentle machine cycle or hand wash if required. Leave enough room for the linen to move and rinse thoroughly so detergent does not remain in the fibres.
Dry and inspect
Air-drying is the safest choice while you check whether a stain has gone. Reshape the item while damp. If tumble-drying is permitted, use low heat only after the mark has disappeared.
Store table linens carefully
Store clean, completely dry linens in a cool, ventilated place. Roll or loosely fold large tablecloths and refold them occasionally to prevent permanent creases. Keep heirloom pieces away from plastic that can trap moisture, and avoid ironing them immediately before long-term storage.
