Fold a Fitted Sheet in 6 Simple Steps

A fitted sheet can be folded into a neat rectangle without fighting the elastic. The trick is to bring the four corners together first, then fold the straightened edges. This six-step method works for linen, cotton and most elasticated fitted sheets.

Before you start

Use a clean, dry sheet and choose a bed, table or other broad surface. If the sheet has just come out of the dryer, fold it promptly: warm fabric is easier to smooth and will develop fewer deep creases.

Identify the two short ends and locate all four corner pockets. Stand with the sheet's long side across your body.

Step 1: Hold two corners

Put one hand inside each of the two corners on a short end, with the inside of the sheet facing you. Hold the elastic seams rather than the loose edge so the corners stay easy to control.

Step 2: Tuck one corner into the other

Bring your hands together. Turn the corner in your right hand over the corner in your left hand so one pocket sits neatly inside the other. Keep holding the paired corners with your left hand.

Step 3: Add the third corner

Run your free hand down the hanging edge to find the third corner. Lift it and tuck it over the two corners already gathered in your hand. Align the seams as closely as possible.

Step 4: Add the final corner

Find the fourth corner and fold it over the other three. All four corner pockets should now be nested together, with the elastic gathered along two adjacent sides.

Step 5: Lay the sheet flat

Place the sheet on your surface with the nested corners at one end. Smooth the fabric gently and arrange the elastic edges into an L shape. Fold the curved elastic inward so the outside edges form a clean rectangle.

Step 6: Fold into thirds

Fold the long sides inward to create a narrow rectangle, then fold the rectangle into thirds or quarters to suit your cupboard. Press out trapped air with your hands instead of compressing the fabric heavily.

How to store fitted sheets neatly

Keep each fitted sheet with its matching flat sheet and pillowcases. One simple method is to place the folded set inside a pillowcase, creating a tidy bundle that is easy to identify. Do not store bed linen while it is even slightly damp.

Common fitted-sheet folding problems

• The corners keep separating: hold the seams firmly and nest each new corner over the same hand.
• The sheet is still rounded: tuck the elastic edge farther inward before making the first long fold.
• The bundle looks bulky: smooth each layer and release trapped air before the final fold.
• The fabric is very creased: fold while slightly warm or smooth damp linen before air-drying.
