Curly Hair Solutions - Linen Towels
Updated August 10, 2026: this article has been refreshed with gentler, more practical advice for drying and caring for curly hair.
Can a linen towel help with curly hair?
A smooth, lightweight linen towel can be a useful alternative to rough drying with thick terry cloth. The most important difference comes from technique: curls usually respond better when excess water is gently pressed or blotted away instead of rubbed. Vigorous rubbing can disturb curl groups, create tangles and make the surface look frizzier as the hair dries.
Linen is absorbent and dries relatively quickly, but not every linen weave feels the same. Choose a soft, washed fabric with a smooth surface rather than a stiff or coarse cloth. If your hair is very delicate, damaged or prone to snagging, compare the feel with a soft cotton T-shirt or a purpose-made microfibre hair towel and use whichever causes the least friction.

How to blot curls without creating frizz
- After rinsing, let excess water run from the hair without twisting it tightly.
- Apply your usual leave-in product while the hair is still wet, if that suits your routine.
- Place the towel beneath the ends and lift sections gently toward the scalp.
- Press for a few seconds, then release. Do not scrub the hair back and forth.
- Stop while the curls are still damp and allow them to air-dry or diffuse on a suitable setting.
This “scrunch and press” approach helps preserve the natural curl pattern. Use a clean section of the towel as you move around the head so that you absorb moisture rather than spreading it back onto the hair.
Choosing a suitable linen towel
A smaller towel is often easier to handle than a full bath sheet. Look for a flexible weave, finished seams and enough surface area to wrap or blot the hair without pulling. A lightweight linen bathroom towel can also be convenient for travel because it packs compactly and dries quickly after use.

Keeping a hair towel clean and soft
Wash the towel often enough to remove hair products, oils and moisture. Follow its care label, use a mild detergent and avoid excessive fabric softener, which can leave a coating on absorbent fibres. Let the towel dry completely between uses and do not leave it bundled in a humid bathroom.
Curly-hair routines are personal, so treat linen as one practical option rather than a universal solution. A soft fabric, minimal friction and gentle handling are the principles that matter most.
