With many of us heading to the beach this summer we've got some handy beach hacks to help trips to the coast go swimmingly. If sandy sandwiches are your bugbear, or you want to know more about foods that can help protect your skin from sun damage, read on.

DIY sand-removing powder

Playing in sand, whether on the beach or in a playground, is one of the joys of childhood. And a lazy day relaxing on the shore with a good book is a vacation must for many of us. But what we don’t love so much is having to scrape sticky sand off wriggly bodies, or from out between our toes. With this clever hack, using inexpensive cornstarch, you can avoid any scratchy sand residue.

Simply fill a glass or stainless steel sugar shaker loosely with cornstarch and sling it in your beach tote. When it’s time for home, sprinkle on any areas of your body that still have sand stuck to them and rub gently. The powder absorbs moisture and stops the sand clinging to your skin, making it easy to brush off.

Frozen water bottles

Stay hydrated and avoid having to sip warm water by freezing your water bottles the night before your beach trip. Not only will they keep the water deliciously cool as they slowly defrost, they will also act as ice packs for the rest of your picnic or snacks.

Upgrade your beach towel

With a few simple stitches you can turn an everyday linen beach towel into a super-comfy lounger. Find a pillow or cushion that’s the same width as your towel and place it a pillow’s distance from the top of the towel. Fold the excess fabric at the top over the pillow and sew along the width of the towel. Roll the rest of the towel over the pillow, and when you hit the beach just unfurl and lie back with a soft headrest.

Foods to boost your skin’s sun natural protection

foods for sun protection

Whilst it’s essential to cover up, avoid the hottest parts of the day and to wear an appropriate SPF sunscreen, there are some foods that will also bolster your skin’s defence against harmful UV rays. Eating fresh fruit and vegetables, and following a Mediterranean diet rich in fish, nuts and olive oil, can strengthen your skin’s natural barrier.

Food like blueberries, watermelon, tomatoes, leafy greens and carrots contain antioxidants that not only help fight damaging free radicals, they can also help reduce wrinkles and premature aging.

So stock up on these healthy goodies well before your vacation for a natural skin-protecting boost. But don’t forget the sunscreen too.

Create a sand barrier

If you hate getting sand in your food and clothing, take along a fitted sheet. Open it out and put your coolbox, bags and any extra equipment in each corner, then stretch the sheet upwards so it creates a barrier (a bit like a paddling pool but obviously not waterproof!). Voila! – no sand where it’s not wanted, and you’ve got a comfy, cool place to lie too. For tips on how to fold a fitted sheet when it’s hometime check out this post.
